Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Salary: £50,000 - £75,000

Requiring a solid understanding of power electronics design and control theory, this position will involve working directly under our Head of R&D and Engineering. You will play a key role through all aspects of the technology development lifecycle, taking concepts through to commercial product for customers.

With a focus on hardware design of converters, filters, and PCBs, you will be active in initiating and leading design reviews and technical discussions and will have an innovative approach with engineering reasoning. Importantly, your work will include supporting project and test activities and contributing to ensure that these are completed within schedule and budget. You will be based in our brand-new West London offices but will have the flexibility to work from home part time if desired.

What you will do:

  • Power Electronic circuitry design using different inverter/rectifier topologies and semiconductor technologies

  • Thermal management design of modules

  • PCB and filter design and testing

  • Sensor selection and integration, including optical fibre and transmitters

  • Benchtop testing of systems, including HIL using platforms such as OPAL-RT

  • Working with manufacturing and supply chain partner technical experts for commercial hardware optimisation, to nnsure that all designs of control implementation respect safety, quality, additional value, and international standards

  • Actively participate in technical development and testing across a multi-disciplinary team including transformer designers, embedded software engineers, PLC control and comms engineers, grid integration engineers and cloud SW specialists.

  • Interface with customers to ensure requirements and expectations are understood and achievable for a wide range of products.

  • Create technical reports, product manuals, and white papers

What you will need:

  • MSc or PhD in Electrical and Electronics engineering or similar

  • Experience in Solid State Power Converters DC/AC, AC/DC, DC/DC buck or boost, AC/AC (Si, SiC technology, VSC and MMC topology)

  • Solid Electric signal processing knowledge (FFT transformation) with focus on active / passive filters modelling and design of higher and inter-harmonics, and ADC / DAC signal converters

  • Experience in HIL simulation of power electronic systems (model-based design and simulations)

  • Experience with circuitry design tools such as SPICE.

It would be useful to have:

  • Good understanding of digital control of power converter control techniques

  • Up to date knowledge of the latest developments in power electronics engineering especially in the area of converter and filter technologies, with a focus on utility substation systems (transformers, solid state systems, fast signal processing) and industry

  • Experience in developing (Analysis and Synthesis) advanced control strategies, measurement processing and protection algorithms and firmware for power electric converters

  • Various techniques and algorithm development for voltage and current control of multi-level inverters (MMC)

  • Experience and background in Programming and Debugging of C / C#, C++ or Python language and Assembler, Familiar with MATLAB / Simulink tool

  • Knowledge of embedded DSP / microcontrollers Real-Time Operating Systems RTOS 32, ARM Core RISC software and solid state PWM modulation control
