Junior Embedded Systems Engineer

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000

Requiring knowledge in firmware development, this position will involve working directly under our Senior Embedded Systems Engineer. You will play a key role in developing and implementing firmware, taking concepts through to commercial product for customers. 

With a focus on embedded software development, you will be active in initiating design reviews and technical discussions and will have an innovative approach with engineering reasoning. Importantly, your work will include supporting project and test activities and help to ensure that these are completed within schedule and budget.

What you will do:

  • Develop embedded software for utility power electronic solid-state converters and their applications. 

  • Implement, test, debug and troubleshoot control DSP / microcontroller processor firmware and algorithms. 

  • Hands on embedded system hardware design validation and debugging. 

  • Ensure that all designs of control firmware implementation respect safety, quality, additional value, and international standards. 

  • Actively participate in technical development and testing across a multi-disciplinary team including transformer designers, HW power electronics designers, PLC control and comms engineers, grid integration engineers and cloud SW specialists. 

  • Create software development process documents, technical reports, product manuals, and white papers. 

 

What you will need:

  • A degree in Electronics, Software engineering or related disciplines.  

  • Experience in C/C++ programming and debugging for embedded platforms. 

  • Experience in using version control tools such as git. 

  • Good understanding of real-time applications. 

  • Ability to read PCB schematics. 

  • Experience in using lab test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multi-meters. 

  • A drive to learn new things, agility in problem solving and ability to effectively collaborate. 

 

It would be useful to have:

  • Experience in STM32 microcontrollers.  

  • Experience in FPGA development. 

  • Experience in communications protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, QSPI, Ethernet, USB. 

  • Experience in other programming and scripting languages such as C#, Python, JavaScript. 

  • Experience in digital closed loop control applications. 

  • Understanding of power electronics. 

  • PCB schematic and layout knowledge. 

  • Embedded Linux.
